Aromatique: The Made-in-the-USA Home Fragrance Brand That Started with a Broomstick

Aromatique Collection

There is a particular kind of home fragrance that doesn't announce itself — it simply makes a room feel like somewhere you want to be. Aromatique has been making that kind of fragrance since 1982, from a small town in Arkansas, and the story of how it started is one of the best in American home goods.

Born in a Kitchen in Heber Springs, Arkansas

Aromatique was founded by Patti Upton in the early 1980s after she was asked to help a friend decorate her gift shop for the holidays. She mixed together leaves, acorns, pine cones, berries, and gum balls, combined with oils and spices — and customers soon began asking to buy the scent filling the store. She started mixing bigger batches in garbage bags, using a broomstick.

That first creation — The Smell of Christmas — was made from Arkansas native botanicals: acorns, pine cones, gumballs, and hickory nuts, fragranced with spices and oils. Placed in a friend's shop, it sold out and customers clamored for more.

When spring rolled around that first year, she was asked to create the smell of spring — and the business took off. Owners of other small stores asked for her products, and she expanded to other fragrance lines, including candles and decorative accessories. "There was nothing like this on the market," Upton said.

That singular idea not only gave birth to Patti's first product and to her company, Aromatique, Inc., but also to an entirely new industry — the Decorative Fragrance Industry. It can be argued that the vast majority of all the home fragrance brands that exist today are tied to the vision of Patti Upton and the success of Aromatique.

Still Made in America, Still Family Owned

Candles are still hand-poured and made in small batches, and decorative fragrance bags include hand-assembled botanicals in their Heber Springs production facility. Today, 80% of Aromatique's employees are female, and women hold many leadership positions across the company, including chief financial officer and managers over production, inventory, purchasing, shipping, and logistics. Patti's granddaughters now lead the design and marketing teams, carrying forward what she built from a backyard and a broomstick.

For a fragrance brand, that continuity matters. It means the same attention to scent and craft that defined the original Smell of Christmas is still present in every candle poured and every room spray bottled today.

The Aromatique Difference: Layered, Room-Filling Fragrance

What sets Aromatique apart from most home fragrance brands is the throw — the way their scents actually fill a room rather than hovering faintly nearby. The blends are thoughtful and layered, built around familiar, comforting combinations that feel polished without being precious. And crucially, the collection gives you multiple formats to work with: candles, refresher oils, room sprays, and reed diffusers that complement each other rather than competing.

Our Favorite Aromatique Pieces at Fina Tavola

The Smell of Spring Glass Scented Candle

Cinnamon Cider Textured Glass Scented Candle
Cozy without being cloying, Cinnamon Cider is a classic blend of warm apple, spice, and depth. It's the candle you reach for on fall and winter evenings, or anytime the house needs to feel a little more like home.

The Smell of Tree Refresher Oil
A few drops revives decorative fragrance or potpourri instantly. Crisp, clean evergreen notes make this a staple worth keeping on hand year-round — not just at Christmas.

Sunkissed Sandalwood Room Fragrance Spray
Smooth, warm, and immediately calming. Coconut and vanilla balanced by sandalwood — the kind of room spray that works in any shared space without overwhelming it.

The Smell of Christmas Reed Diffuser Gift Set
The flagship fragrance, reimagined as a flame-free diffuser. Warm clove, citrus, and cinnamon fill an entryway or living space for weeks at a time — and the gift set packaging makes this one of the easiest holiday gifts you can give.

How to Layer Aromatique Through Your Home

One of Aromatique's strengths is how naturally the formats work together. Light The Smell of Spring during the day for a fresh, airy baseline, then switch to Cinnamon Cider in the evening when the mood calls for something warmer. Keep Sunkissed Sandalwood by the door for a quick refresh before guests arrive. Let The Smell of Christmas diffuser run quietly in the entryway so the house smells welcoming the moment someone walks in. Use The Smell of Tree refresher oil to revive any decorative fragrance that's lost its throw.

Fragrance layering doesn't have to be complicated. Aromatique makes it feel effortless.
